India’s Next Head Coach: BCCI To Invite Applications Soon | India Cricket News – Wisden

The BCCIhas announced that it will soon invite applications for India’s next head coach, as confirmed by secretary Jay Shah.

Rahul Dravid, who has been India’s head coach since November 2021 after taking over from Ravi Shastri, got his contract renewed along with the support staff after the 2023 ODI World Cup. With his short extension ending in June this year, India will soon roll out advertisements for the latest candidate in the role.

“Dravid can re-apply”

Under Dravid, India won the 50-over Asia Cup last year and reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final after winning 10 games on the trot. They also qualified for the final of the World Test Championship but lost to Australia at the Oval.

Speaking to a group of reporters, Shah revealed that Dravid could reapply for the post if he wished to: “Rahul’s tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so. Other members of the coaching staff, such as batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, will be decided after consultation with the new coach.

No split-coaching

He also said that India will not go for a split-coaching setup, similar to the one in England.

“We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body. That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India, ” Shah said.

Shah revealed that the new coach will serve a long tenure with an initial period of three years. He also quashed the recent reports claiming the return of the defunct Champions League T20. Furthermore, he stated that Hardik Pandya, who has received an A grade in the new BCCI Central Contracts, has agreed to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Colin Munro has announced his retirement from international cricket after missing out on New Zealand’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

Munro had made himself available for the upcoming T20 World Cup despite not playing an international for New Zealand since 2020 and was in consideration. New Zealand coach Gary Stead confirmed that Munro was discussed at the selection table when the squad was announced but said there was no room for the veteran left-hander.

Despite making the move to play franchise cricket full-time over the last four years, Munro had not given up on adding to his 123 caps for New Zealand. But at 37, he has formally called time on his international career although he will continue playing franchise cricket.

“Playing for the Black Caps has always been the biggest achievement in my playing career,” Munro said. “I never felt prouder than donning that jersey, and the fact that I’ve been able to do that 123 times across all formats is something I will always be incredibly proud of.

“Although it has been a while since my last appearance, I never gave up hope that I might be able to return off the back of my franchise T20 form. With the announcement of the Black Caps squad for the T20 World Cup now is the perfect time to close that chapter officially.”

Munro played one Test, 57 ODIs and 65 T20Is for New Zealand. He excelled in the shortest form scoring three centuries, including a 47-ball hundred against West Indies in 2018 which was a New Zealand record at the time. He also has made a 14-ball half-century against Sri Lanka which remains a Black Caps record and is the fourth fastest in T20I cricket.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink said Munro would be remembered as a pioneering short-form batter for New Zealand.

“Colin was one of our first players to embrace the aggressive, 360-degree style batting that is now accepted all around the world as best practice,” Weenink said.

“He was one of the pioneers of the new game, an innovative batsman who took calculated risk-taking to a new level, and led what was to become a revolution in the way short-form cricket was played. We thank him for his amazing contribution in more than hundred international games, and wish him well in his future pursuits.”

‘Impact Player Is Not Permanent, But…’: Jay Shah Mulls Controversial IPL Rule Change – OneCricket

Jay Shah address the controversial impact player rule of IPL 2024 (X.com)

Amid backlash over the ill effects of the Impact Player Rule in IPL, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has insisted that the rule was introduced as a test case and will not be implemented on a permanent basis anytime soon.

Impact Player Rule, which allows IPL teams to sub a player with a specialist batter/bowler during any stage of the game, has received backlash after records were shattered in the IPL 2024 season.

Analysts argued that impact player rule is diminishing the importance of all-rounders and also is unfair to bowlers to a certain extent as record numbers of runs were scored in this IPL 2024 season.

Reacting to the criticism, BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarified that impact player rule was initially introduced in IPL as a trial basis. It is a mere test case at the moment as BCCI are yet to decide if it should be imposed permanently.

Jay Shah speaks out on Impact Player Rule

Jay Shah added that the core idea behind the impact player rule was to ensure that Indian players, who would otherwise warm the bench, should get more and more opportunities.

The secretary also confirmed that the apex body has yet to receive any negative feedback against the Impact player rule.

“Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL, We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises, and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” Jay Shah quoted by Cricbuzz.

However, given the recent debate, Shah confirmed that a detailed discussion will be held with the IPL stakeholders, franchises, and broadcasters to understand their viewpoint, and accordingly, a decision regarding the continuation of the Impact Player rule will be made in due time.

Notably, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was the first active player to raise concern about the adverse effects of the Impact player rule, saying it’s taking away the core values of cricket just for the sake of entertainment.
